The Game

Becoming a Kungfu master has always being a dream for many people. Using HTC VIVE, our guests will walk into an ancient Chinese environment surrounding by traditional music and architectures. They will be able to hold the swords hitting the flying darts, moving around in the square platform to avoid fire, and forming a Tai-chi shape to become the Kungfu master.

The temple environment was inspired by the traditional architecture I once traveled to. It mixed the element with the signature eave on the top of the wall, the prayer flags under and the gilt umbrella the master is using. In addition, the wooden platform and the stone lion is also a symbol with thousands of years of history. I also added golden maidenhair trees with “airborne” technique to make it visually beautiful.
The challenge for me in 3D is always having a style and I believe the details like tilted the eaves and using a consistent color tone really helped.

The ENVIRONMENT

In the VR environment, the guests sometimes confused about their identity. At the first stage, I just use the master interaction. And then we decided to have other monks in the beginning as well as the winning and losing stage to make guests feel more into the scene.

The challenge of this game is definitely adjusting the speed and the difficulty of the obstacles. Our thinking from the beginning is using multi-obstacle and multi-platform (Kinnect+HTC VIVE). VIVE detects the positions and Kinnect will be used to monitor the foot move. However, in the play-testing we realized that limited obstacles will give the guest more space to strategies, so we simplified it with different waves of obstacles that guests need to hit or doge.

Room plan

The room we need to decorate is the VIVE room which used to have two sets of VIVE and one storage area. The room is relatively big so I designed wallpaper and using cardboard-made bamboos plus some low angle spotlights to create an ancient atmosphere. We also took use of the folding screen for traditional arts display. The rounded shape gives better intimacy for the tea area.

We want to let the guest not only just playing one game but having a great experience. That's why we planned out a route for them.
